Physical Geography

Coastal Defences – ½ day

Just a few miles from Hooke Court the small seaside town of West Bay or Lyme Regis has undergone extensive re-development work in terms of its sea defences. A tutor will lead your investigation of what has been done and why the destructive power of the sea made the work necessary. Transport not included.

Forest Orienteering – ½ day

A guided adventure through the local countryside and woods using maps to record location, make predictions and comment on relief.

Fossil Hunting at Charmouth – ½ day

After an introduction to fossils at the Charmouth Heritage Centre take a walk on the beach with a local warden who will help everyone find a fossil to take home. Transport not included.

Village Trail and Castle orienteering – ½ day

Orienteer your way around the village, collecting information and finding answers to the clues. then further develop orienteering skills in the grounds of the magnificent castle.

Destructive Coastal Systems of Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door – whole day

Two of Dorset’s most famous coastal features provide an excellent venue for studying the impact of the sea on the coastline. Transport not included.

River Study – whole day or ½ day

Investigate the pools and waterways. Study indicator species, wetland flora and fauna, flow of water and cross section of the stream bed. As they walk along the river the children identify river features from various vantage points along the route.

Lyme Regis - whole day or ½ day

Visit the RNLI to find out how they work and dress your teacher in their uniform. You may enjoy walking in the steps of Jane Austin and the Duke of Monmouth. Alternatively you may wish to visit the Town Mill and experience how the mill works and help mill the flour. See the finished product in the bakery next door. Transport not included.

Sand Dune Formation at Studland, Dorset or Llansteffan, Wales – whole day or ½ day

These unique stretches of coastline are carefully protected and are excellent models for the growth of sand dunes and their changing ecology. The children enjoy a series of practical tasks looking at the stages of sand dune development. The children will also spend time investigating the characteristics of the plants and their role within the ecosystem.

Contour & Mapping Workshop – evening

Learn about contours and mapping in a fun way, building simple models of local coastal features.

Fossils – evening

A fun workshop looking at how fossils are made and making casts and impressions of fossils to take home.
